How Long Does Handmade Soap Last? And how to Make It Last Longer

How Long Does Handmade Soap Last (And How to Make It Last Longer)

One of the most common questions around handmade soap is how long it actually lasts. And the honest answer is - it depends.

How many people are using it, where it’s kept and how it’s cared for all make a difference. In our house of two adults, we typically use two bars a month at the basin, alongside a Soap on a Rope in the shower.

In simple terms, handmade soap can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to over a month, depending on how it’s used and how well it’s allowed to dry between uses.

What affects how long handmade soap lasts?

  • How often it’s used
  • How many people are using it
  • Whether it’s allowed to dry properly between uses
  • The type of soap dish it’s kept on
  • Humidity and airflow in your bathroom

What shortens the life of a soap bar?

The biggest culprit is water. Soap that sits in water or never has the chance to dry out will wear down quickly.

If a bar is constantly damp - for example, in a poorly ventilated bathroom or on a flat dish with no drainage - it will soften and disappear much faster.

This is often the difference between a bar lasting weeks or just days.

How to make handmade soap last longer

  • Use a well-draining soap dish that keeps the bar raised
  • Allow soap to dry fully between uses
  • Keep your bathroom well ventilated where possible
  • Rotate between two bars if needed (setting one aside to dry fully)

A good soap dish makes all the difference. Designs that allow airflow around the bar & drain water away properly will help your soap stay firm and last much longer.

What makes handmade soap different?

All Bohemia & Flower bars are made using the traditional cold process method and cured for a minimum of four to six weeks. This creates a harder, longer-lasting bar that holds its shape and produces a creamy, gentle lather.

If you're curious about the process, you can read more about what makes cold process soap better than commercial soap .

That said, not all handmade soap is designed to last as long as physically possible. There are ways to create extremely hard bars, but often at the expense of the experience.

My bars sit somewhere in the middle - designed for an all round experience, not just to be the longest lasting (if this is a priority for you, check out salt soap bars), but designed to feel good to use, be authentically made and using the best plant based ingredients. Creamy, balanced and gentle on the skin, while still holding together well and not turning to mush.

A small shift that makes a big difference

Something as simple as changing your soap dish or allowing your bar to dry properly can dramatically extend how long it lasts.

FAQ

How long does handmade soap last?

Typically between a few weeks to over a month, depending on how often it’s used and how well it is cared for between uses.

Why does my soap go soft?

Bohemia & Flower soaps are made with coconut oil which creates hard bars of soap, but in general soap softens when it sits in water or doesn’t have time to dry out. A well-draining dish and good airflow can prevent this.

Should I cut my soap bar to make it last longer?

Although it's often suggested by soap makers, it's not always practical. Well-cured Bohemia & Flower soap bars can be very difficult to cut so I don't recommend this to my customers. Proper drying between uses usually has a much bigger impact.
